It is already possible, check wikiki and the links under update manager
resources
You basically create a links subdirectory that contains files that points
to the 'other' place where plugins are

By workbench you mean workspace (where YOUR data are) in this case use -
data or the place where plugins are ? In which case Update manager is
your friend :-)
