[news.eclipse.tools] Re: How to upgrade

I also wonder what the best way is to upgrade. Since M3 I started to unzip all files over the previous installation and for M3 and now M4 this seems to work.

The advantage so far to my delight is, that I can start the new installation and all the configuration is available. So far, so good.

But I wonder if this is a recommended way on the long run or if it is better to have a clean new install and then copy the needed files of configuration and plug-ins to the new directory. All this in order to avoid having maybe files from an old installation together with a new release.

However, I think it might be helpful to have a third party plug-in directory that can be specified in a set-up and just point a new installation to the 3rd party plug-in directory, that might be outside the eclipse tree.

In addition it might be helpful to configure the path to the workbench rather than have it pre-defined under the eclipse tree, at least under Windows.

M4 has just came out. I'd like to ask a question that should have been
asked long before. What's the best way to upgrade Eclipse?

What I currently do is to use "external" workspace, outside of <eclipse
install dir>, say C:\eclipse. And when I want to install new release,
remove the old (C:\eclipse) and unzip the new (into C:\eclipse). But this
still requires installation of the plugins.

Is there a better way?
