Here is a comment on error messages.

The wording of the message led me to believe there was a problem and not that
there wasn't a viewer registered. I would think that the message could be
reworded to state the problem a little better (no viewer registered, etc..). A
better solution, if possible, would be to do it like the OS does - pop up a
dialog and let them select the viewer.
