Thanks for your support - to reiterate, I am not proposing anything. I 
am requesting clarification as to how I am suppose to configure PDT, and 
I'm hoping that a PDT developer in this area will give me a definitive 
response.

Though if the response is "Sorry we don't support publishing out to a 
server any more, you'll need to create a new project inside the document 
root", I must admit I shall be rather disappointed.
