[news.eclipse.tools.cdt] Indexer doesn't run

I just started trying to use CDT on an existing embedded project that is built externally.  It has a large number of files and I don't believe the indexer ever runs. (I have never seen it run and I the functionality isn't there) In the preferences it is set on fast indexing.  Do I need a build configuration to cause the indexer to run?  Is there a way to manually launch the indexer?
