I've distilled it down to a small project that exhibits the problem, and 
put it at:
http://www2.humboldt.co.uk/eclipse-gdb.tar.gz

The file debug.log inside the archive contains a complete log of all GDB 
interactions from starting Eclipse to seeing the error. The problem occurs 
if I "step into" serial_open(), then use "step over" to exit the function.
