[news.eclipse.technology] SWT_AWT widget

I need to use the AWT java library inside the eclipse framework. I've read 
that there is a SWT_AWT widget that allows awt components to run embedded 
into swt applications. As long as I know it is only implemented for Windows 
and is still in a beta state.
Does anybody know if this widget will be continued? Are there any plans to 
port it to other OS and move it to the API of SWT?
