You've probably already read Neil Bartlett's excellent article on this 
topic, haven't you? In case you haven't, it's here:

There's not much I can add.

For Swordfish, we try to be as "standard OSGi" as possible and hot 
deployment is an issue, so we prefer OSGi services.
Maybe someone on eclipse.technology.equinox can give you some more 
guidance on this.
