[news.eclipse.technology.phoenix] Re: Icon Usage Re: Eclipse is looking for Design Templates

Linda and Andrew,

You guys are doing really exciting work on design templates for eclipse.org. Linda, thanks for linking us up with many UI elements of Eclipse. I think the Eclipse UI looks great, and if we can pull UI elements to make our website resemble the product, it will help associate the website to the actual product.

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing your submission(s) on bugzilla!

Denis

hi Andrew,

Attached is quick look at desktop icons in use on MS. Eclipse has icons consistent with these metaphors.
Would be good to gather Phoenix icon requirements to evaluate as a set?

cheers, Linda

Hey Linda and Jinsil

This is great! looks like we have some decent collaboration going on.
lets keep it rolling. And then submit something to Bugzilla together? My time moving forward is limited as
well but perhaps between all of us we can come up with something.

A search icon is not necessary, but there has been alot of buzz around using the Eclipse Platform icons
carrying over the visual vocab. I agree that they should be consistent in usage. Is there a download icon?

I like these banner treatments lets keep tweaking, keeping in mind that the menus will be dynamically generated.
That being said try to represent text with no anti-alias. I will put more up to show different layouts for different types of pages.
Keep in mind that in each of these treatments some columns will be fixed and other 100%
Would it be helpful to pass along the PSD files?

Anyway enough banter,
I'll bang out some more ideas based on your feedback and mock ups

Hi Andrew,

By way of intro, I'm the lead visual designer for the Eclipse UI,
working primarily with the Eclipse Platform UI development team.

Here's some feedback on the design...

- overall nice work, like the simplicity and clean layout
- the banner seems too dark and overpowering
- placement of search box limits ability to add future top level categories
- search layout: relationship of icon to search text needs to be
stronger, ie button. Is search icon necessary? (see SearchBoxStyles.gif
attached, simpler ideas)
- because top level Categories will be used alot, reconsider white
foreground text on black background for these - not easiest to read

- building on what you've done, I'm attaching some quick mockups here
and next note as ideas you might want to explore further in your next
iterations (these aren't intended as final, polished designs). They were
done by Jinsil Boo, a designer in the Toronto Lab Media Design Studio.
- ideas 1 and 3 are problematic re not enough bread crumb space and
limiting ability to add future categories, but sending in case you want
to explore the style thoughts further
- we are short of resource at this time re providing more design work or
an official submission, but I'll look into this more and be in touch if
we are able to.

Re Eclipse UI icons...

- Eclipse UI icons are available in icons folder at:
http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/org.eclipse.ui/
- recommend you only re-use eclipse icons if the metaphor/usage is
identical. Inconsistent usage will degrade the effectiveness of the icon.
- using the Eclipse icon appearance style may not be appropriate, for
example, the Eclipse search icon on our mockups 4a, 4b looks bad on the
banner. You could consider using the same metaphors where appropriate,
but with an alternate "Eclipse web" style, perhaps an outline style
- suggest you decide first what global set of icons/metaphors will be
needed, in what context, then evaluate appropriateness of UI icon
re-use and style for the set
- I'm also happy to help with any Eclipse icon questions you have

cheers,
Linda

Okay,

again here are some drafts. I am looking for feedback before I submit them
formerly to bugzilla.
Does anyone have the icons for Eclipse? I would like to integrate some
Eclipse visual vocab. i.e. download icon...
