Hi Jeff,
No, the tooling does not depend on any of the runtime classes. The
javax.persistence.Persistence class is a bootstrap class that is supposed to
be implemented by your runtime provider. The Hibernate, Oracle, Versant
vendors include it in their downloads.
Just as an FYI - so far we have only tested with the Hibernate and Versant
runtimes. Oracle should work if they are specification compliant with
their mapping meta data using the Generic plugin option, though we've not
tried it. Also, you will have probably manage putting their .jar files in
your project classpath yourself unlike the Hibernate and Versant options
where we do that for you.
