[news.eclipse.technology.jsr220-orm] Re: VOA 4

Hi Christiaan,
There is no direct relationship between this project and the Versant Open
Access open source runtime. There is only an indirect relationship in that
many of the Versant engineers are working on both. The tooling is meant to
be open and support any runtime vendor who wants to use the tooling
extension points or just use the generic runtime option if their runtime is
spec compliant. This is demonstrated by the toolings support for Hibernate
in addition to Generic runtimes. We actually had to create a special plugin
for Hibernate because in some cases it was not creating column names
according to spec so default DDL generation found in Generic would not work.
Plus we thought a few other packing and configuration points would be handy.
We had to withdrawl the original runtime offering to the project due to
conflicts with the eclipse organizations positioning with respect to
"runtime" -vs- "tooling". Our runtime was removed at the request of the
Eclipse foundation.
So, there will be no combined packaging. However, we definitely want to
support the VOA community and will release a runtime vendor option
specifically for VOA shortly and provide the appropriate download links as
you find with Hibernate.
