So the real good news for carbon users is in the last para. The rest of
it describes various swt/carbon/jruby issues on carbon.

So I'm stuck with this wonderful looking white laptop with a glowing
apple on the front, that conks out on swt 3.3.

SWT 3.4M7 is stable, and jruby 1.1.1 conks out when executed with
-XstartOnFirstThread (http://www.eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#carbonapp)

The -XstartOnFirstThread seems to have been fixed in jruby trunk
(http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/JRUBY-2510) and 1.1.2 is expected to be
out in a few weeks and I hope to make sure that this bug does not
resurface on the mac again.
