[news.eclipse.technology.ecp] Re: Proposed project name

Boy I hope all this proposed project name stuff isn't my fault. I was just concerned early on that that the Exadel marketing _might_ think they could drive the project in a non-open manner by specifying names, packages, etc. In retrospect I shouldn't have been concerned since the Eclipse rules for project creation clearly specify how the community of contributors and committers must operate to be successful.

Now to wade back into the "proposed named" waters, I would just want the name to generally reflect the artifacts produced. In our case we're looking at bundles or JSR-291/JSR-277 thingees when that work is complete. Therefore important questions we should resolve are:

1. Do we expect some of our bundles to run in a non-osgi environment?

If possible I think we should at the very least not go out of our way to prevent it. Spring is a good example of a framework that provides a _preferred_ way of building your applications. However if you can't go the full DI container approach then you can use just the resource loading abstractions or the AOP proxy support.

2. Will we have integration with other platform environments like JEE, JME and Portals?

For an enterprise these are important issues and we should at least have a strategy for dealing with the Weblogic, Websphere, Geronimo, JBoss and Tomcats of the world. The current E5 example has Tomcat embedded in the OSGi framework as bundles. What if for integration or clustering support we needed to reverse the model and deploy the ECP (yes, I'm now picking a TLA. I can learn what the letters stand for later) encased in a WAR or EAR file.

3. What Eclipse tools or other projects are we looking to build on to bring about Enterprise Components world domination 2.0 (patent pending)?

The recently approved PHP project is looking to leverage a lot of functionality from the WTP. Is that a goal we will have too? That could effect the name for some people as we might be more of an extension with bundles to another project over a full platform. Also can we utilize code or the ideas from other projects like the WTP server connectors. Is that code in a way that we can use/extend it?

In my opinion Enterprise Component Platform or Eclipse Enterprise Component Platform exactly describe the project. Regarding unofficial name, I would name it Terminator. ;) In the atronomical meaning of course:
