This proposal sounds very interesting.

I was attending a talk about the "eclipse rich client platform" yesterday
and was impressed about the component based approach to develop
applications.

A communication / middleware layer for eclipse (however this might look
like) would be helpful. I would be glad to see any JMS extension points
(the ability to connect to a JMS system) ;-)

Actually, JMS is one of the group messaging transports that we will be initially using as an implementation.

VOIP is also an (old) topic with (new) interest. Perhaps the comm technology could also provide hooks here.

Yes. I hope/expect that VOIP implementations can/will provide ECF extensions.

CSCW for development purposes, that's somthing I have not yet considered, but for distributed dev teams, this sounds interesting.

The EComm Reference Applications show many interesting (perhaps too many)
different areas. I wonder if it is possible to provide a 'generic' layer
for all different kinds of communication technologies. Perhaps it is
better to focus on the most urgent topic. But what is it? Hopefully this
newsgroup directs the proposal to the right direction.

Well, we think we have a notion of how to produce a generic communications layer...that will be useful for many communication technologies/protocols. It won't necessarily be a perfect fit for all protocols and existing APIs, but we do think it can provide a means to support a potentially large number of 'communication components' for Eclipse. This is made natural by using Eclipse 'extension points' so that other plugin developers can easily provide/expose their own communications capabilities to the Eclipse platform.

We've put together a revision of the proposal that we hope addresses some of your concerns. Please let us know what you think:
