I have performed a clean installation (CME 0.1.2 & build 200406251208) - and
it now works.

Supplementary info ...

Looking again at the two original configurations I was using, I note :-

Eclipse 3.0 M4 setup (works) has the AJDT 1.1.10 and CME 0.1.2 plugins
installed.
Eclipse 3.0 Final setup (failing) has a much more extensive set of plugins
installed, including:

 - AJDT 1.1.11
 - CME 0.1.2
 - Ruby Dev Tools 0.4.2
 - Spring Framework 1.0.2
 - Spring IDE 1.0.3
 - MyEclipse 3.7.200

So perhaps, there is/was a plugin conflict issue.
