[ews.eclipse.technology.aspectj] IMPORTANT: Proposed closure of this newsgroup

Summary:
We propose shutting down this newsgroup to avoid splitting the
community between the aspectj-users mailing list and here. A mail-to-news gateway exists at Gmane to allow anyone to access the mailing list as if it were a newsgroup.

More details:
AspectJ has an active and healthy user community with a long history of
welcoming and supporting newcomers as well as engaging in more in-depth
discussions. However almost all of that takes place on the aspectj-users
mailing list, and not here on this newsgroup. This splitting up of the
community is clearly not healthy, and often results in people posting
here having to wait a long time for an answer, and fairly often not
getting an answer at all. There is of course no guarantee of getting an
answer on the mailing list, but the number of responses and time to
first response is on average significantly higher.

Our conclusion was therefore that the best overall option for the
AspectJ community is to remove this newsgroup, leaving the mailing list
as the one and only place to ask questions about the AspectJ language,
compiler, and associated tools. The AJDT newsgroup will remain for
questions and discussion specifically relating to the Eclipse support
for AspectJ.

For subscription information and archives of the mailing list see the
user resources page of the AspectJ website at:

http://www.eclipse.org/aspectj/resources.php

See also gmane.org for details of how the mail-to-news gateway works, where the mailing list appears as group "gmane.comp.java.aop.aspectj.general". It can be accessed from a newsreader via this URL:
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.aop.aspectj.general
More info and other ways of accessing and searching are here:
http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.aop.aspectj.general
Posting to the list is allowed from the newsgroup interface - you just have to confirm your email address with gmane first (posting for the first time will trigger this).

If you strongly object to this move, please let us know. We would welcome alternative proposals. Otherwise this group will be frozen to new posts in a week or so.

Kind regards,

Matt
+ the rest of the AspectJ/AJDT team
