Robert,
The answer to your question is: Yes. While a major aspect of ALF is indeed
process integration (the "tool chain"), ALF will also provide data
integration (passing the outputs from one tool and providing them as inputs
to another). In the early phases of the project, ALF will provide a
designer and a runtime component to map data from one tool to another,
however, a longer term goal of ALF is to develop example XML vocabularies
for data interchange. So in the early phases ALF will enable data
integration among tools, and later on it will facilitate that interchange,
such that each tool need only map to and from the standard XML vocabularies,
rather than having many unique mappings between each pair of tools.
Designing and getting consensus around such vocabularies can be a protracted
process however, and we did not want to delay the benefits of ALF until
consensus as achieved. So, ALF will provide the data integration you
describe in the initial release, and the example vocabularies will come as
industry vendors and customers agree on the data to be exchanged for each
subject area that tools address.

Brian Carroll
