[news.eclipse.platform.rcp] how does the launcher locate java

Hi,

We have a team member who has issues running our product unless he 
specifies -vm <path to java>. It seems that the errors indicate it is 
finding some remnant of an older java on his system.

Can anyone recommend a good resource that explains the exact methods by 
which the launcher locates Java?
