[news.eclipse.platform.rcp] Timer On Shell Over Workbench

I was wondering if someone could give me ideas
of how to incorporate a timer or a clock into a
shell that is on the workbench so far my experiments
have only worked while taking total focus of the application
nothing else can be done in it while the tiem is working.
