Yes, but you can base your product on plugins and create a feature and 
just create the update site from that point without defined your product 
using features. So what is the logic of having an exclusive or in 
choosing how to build your product? Is it recommended to define your 
features first and then build the product? Is the use plugins an interim 
step for testing? When you are given a choice there must be a rationale 
in choosing one over the other?
