[news.eclipse.newcomer] Re: Adding RCP to a Classic Installation

Glad it helped. My final comment is that you probably would have had an easier time if you had started with one of the download packages (eg, Eclipse for JEE Developers, Eclipse for Java Developers, Modeling Package, etc) instead of the Eclipse Classic (aka, Platform SDK).
There is a "Compare Packages" link somewhere on the downloads page that helps decide which one you want.

Thanks for that! I do wish that there was an 'easy mode' for installing the plugins in the main eclipse site. That was a wonderful solution and seems to solve the problem.

I think that eclipse is a most useful tool for professional developers. They probably learn over time and really appreciate the flexibility that eclipse offers. For newbies and dilettantes (like me), it is really daunting to get started with. I hope over time to be more comfortable with it.

I need to remember three things:

1/ Millions of people use eclipse, so I will figure it out over time.
2/ I want to develop an application that will work well in Linux and Windows. The eclipse RCP will allow me to do that.
3/ It has taken me about a year to get comfortable with ubuntu. It is only reasonable to expect that it will take me that long to get comfortable with eclipse.

Now I get to play with one of the books!

Thanks,
