Yeah, the Ubuntu-provided versions seem to lag severely.

Download the latest released version of Eclipse from an eclipse.org mirror, 
unpack it into a directory you've got write access to, and make sure you've 
got a Sun JRE installed (and that Eclipse is using it).  You'll have much 
better luck.
