[news.eclipse.newcomer] Update Manager Configuration problems

When I try to use the Update Manager to import a new or update an existing 
plugin, I am receiving the following error.

 ----- Current configuration problems -----
   Resulting configuration does not contain the platform.
 ----- Configuration problems after the operation -----
   Resulting configuration does not contain the platform.
   SpellChecker3 (3.1.5) requires plug-in "org.eclipse.ui".

This problem is consitant for every update I attempt.  I have seen 
numerous questions on this subject, but I can not seem to find its 
resolution.  Any help would be appreciated.
