[news.eclipse.newcomer] Too Slow

Hi,
After checking out many ide's on linux env , i found eclipse to my liking.
Problem is that it is too slow. My main(only) use is C++ . 
1. It takes too long to start up
2. After that whatever i do like right click or even changing focus ,it 
takes agaes to update.
3. It took me 3 hr to write a 10 line code , no kidding :-)

4. I like everthing about it ,other then first 3 points

My Platform:
CPU=Intel P4 2.4 Ghz
Memory=256 MB
Linux kernel/distro =2.6.12-10-386/kubuntu
Desktop=KDE 3.5.1
Java(java --version)=java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.0.2 20050808 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 
4.0.1-4ubuntu9)

ECLIPSE=Platform Runtime Binary(only,which is 27 MB and not 103 MB)
       eclipse-platform-3.1.2-linux-gtk.tar.gz  
PLUGIN=CDT 3.02

Thats all.

Is there anyway i can increase the speed/response-time of eclipse. 
I have no idea about java , am i missing some trick here ?
Or is it my requirement does not match up ?
