[news.eclipse.newcomer] install plugin if only zip is available

I'd like to install VE 1.1M1 which just became available however the
announcement in the VE NG points only to ZIP files.  FAQs and NG articles
I've seen all warn against manual installation into the plugins directory.
So how do I install this plugin if the only pointers I have are to ZIP
files, not update sites?
