[news.eclipse.newcomer] Eclipse hangs on startup

I was trying out some toy projects in Eclipse. Then I started a "real" one, intended as a student exercise. I ended up having it in the workspace of one of the toy experiments. It wouldn't run because it claimed that it couldn't load one of the classes of the toy experiment. So I selected the toy experiment, selected the option to delete it from the workspace, and confirmed that I wanted to delete the project from the workspace but not delete the project.

I am running on Windows XP SP2, on a dual processor Dell Xeon system (hyperthread enabled).

Eclipse appeared to restart itself. The startup splash screen came up, and it hung. I shut it down using the task manager. The next time I started it, I got a notice that the workspace was in use, please select another workspace. So I logged off and logged back on. Now all it does is hang at the splash screen. I can kill eclipse.exe and javaw.exe from the task manager, but I cannot restart Eclipse; it keeps hanging at the splash screen.

What do I do?
