Thank you for your pointers. Unfortunately, the underlying model cannot be
changed, and the Mindmap example doesn't really have recursive containment
as the Subtopics are just represented by references. If this is indeed a
limitation of GMF, can someone tell me why this is and if it can be changed
in a future release?

Try mindmap example, it might give some directions, mindmap example have
somewhat similar thing something like Topic/SubTopic, Topic is topnode
reference.
