[news.eclipse.modeling.amalgam] Re: couple of useability questions

Hi Rich

Yes it is Steve (Bill Hinge is a web alias I often use - I was born in a
place called Billinge ;-). Still pushing the case for GMF and seem to be
making progress

Thanks for the quick responses.

I tried to import across into the commercial product (am I allowed to
mention it ?) but I had a few inconsistencies. I've normally stuck with
the default wizard settings but I have tried several of the features.
I may try again next week if I have more time but the manual method
on amalgam seems to be working. There is a crude satisfaction in doing
everything manually though ;)

I may have some other questions later on if you don't mind. I split my
DSL into several ecore files and I'm using references to UML and Ecore
plugins etc. So far I've created a couple of gmf editors based on two of
the ecores so I think I'm getting a feel for how things may work.

I've now got a paper copy of your book to work from so that should help.

regards
Steve

Hi Steve (or is it Bill?),

If I'm thinking of the right commercial product you're referring to, and I
think I am, I've tried to answer your questions below...

Best,

Hi

I've just started using amalgam and I like it.

I have previously used a commercial GMF based tool & the vanilla
Eclipse. I liked the commercial product but it seems that amalgam gives
a bit better low level support ie creation of gmfmap and generator
models when doing complex things.

Well, the commercial tool provided the same capabilities, though hidden by default.

I noticed that when I create a gmfmap diagram that my DSL attributes are
not automatically created unlike in commercial tools. This may be a bit
of a pain if I need to recreate the file. Is there an easier way of
doing adding attributes?

Not really. Aside from the wizard provided by GMF, there is nothing more related to this in Amalgam.

Also I note that if I make changes to the gmfmap etc, the gmfgen doesn't
seem to be updated automatically. Is there a way of ensuring my
gmfgen is updated?

Sorry, that's another commercial-only feature. You'll need to manually
regenerate the gmfgen from the gmfmap when you make changes.
I had a look but I didn't notice a way of creating figure gallery (as
found in the commercial tools - does this exist? I'm thinking of the
ability to set RGB colours etc ;)

Sorry again, the concept of a figure gallery is also commercial-only. Really, it's just a fancy gmfgraph editor.
