There are JUnit tests on the oda.consumer.helper implementation, but not 
sure if it would serve as the kind of example that you are looking for. 
They are in DTP CVS under 
HEAD/org.eclipse.datatools.connectivity/tests/org.eclipse.datatools.connectivity.oda.consumer.test*

As for where to look in BIRT source, they are in the 
"org.eclipse.birt.data.engine.odaconsumer" package under the 
"org.eclipse.birt.data" plugin project.
