[news.eclipse.dsdp.vpp] Why VPP

First, welcome to the VPP News group.
VPP stands for Virtual Prototyping Platform, the aim is to build the
basic eclipse infrastructure components that are common to almost all  ESL
tools (which use Virtual Prototypes of one form or another). 
Eclipse is becoming an ESL-Industry standard GUI for tools, so this
project is important to everybody.
GreenSocs is going to manage the VPP project and try to help co-ordinate
those people who wish to contribute. It will also provide a "sandbox"
to experiment with ideas, and it will link the ESL infrastructure world
to the Eclipse world. 
There has also been extensive academic interest in the use of Eclipse
for ESL, this project will provide two benefits to that community. First
it will act as a central resource (which is integrated with the rest of
the Eclipse eco-system). Second it will ensure that academia and industry
are working from the same base, academic research will therefore be of
more direct value to industry.
The VPP project will act as an "umbrella" for a collection of plug-ins
that are related to VPPs.
So, the remaining questions are:
What would people like to see in the VPP?
What have people got to contribute in the short term?
