[news.eclipse.newcomer] Java projects disappearing

I'm using Eclipse Ganymede for java development.

Every so often a project simply disappears from the Package Explorer window. If I try to recreate it, it says it already exists. Also, the folders are clearly still there under the workspace.

(In one case, I tried deleting the folders under the workspace and it still said it was there. Finally, a File | Refresh gave a message about missing files with the option to remove the project. That allowed me to recreate it. Big hassle, though, setting all the libraries, preferences, etc.)

In all these projects, the source files are linked from outside the workspace folder hierarchy.

It is very puzzling when these projects are not visible, yet Eclipse knows about them because it won't allow me to create a new one with the same name.

(I have been running Windows Backup (not restore) lately; don't see how that could cause it though.)

I would appreciate any help in troubleshooting this, or a way to force projects to load. I searched and found a 2007 thread with a similar problem, but no solution.

Regards,
