My most recent theory is this was due
to

But, I've also seen several CVS related
error messages in my own dev. env. 

The server reported an error while performing
the "cvs checkout" command.
  : cvs [checkout aborted]: received
abort signal
  : cvs: rcs.c:3151: RCS_getrevtime:
Assertion `rcs != ((void *)0)' failed.

so there may be CVS problems too?
