Re: [wtp-pmc] Fwd: [Bug 510140] [restructure] datatools Collapse DataTools and turn it into a (Web) Tools subproject

Konstantin,

As WTP is of course a major consumer of DTP, it behoves us to discuss what would be in the best interests of WTP.   The discussion should of course be open and archived, which is possible via either communication channel that I mentioned.  I 100% agree that in general, a wider discussion should happen on cross-project about the future of DTP so that the entire community can participate in that larger discussion.  Not sure if Wayne, Brian P, or someone else should start that thread.  I'm surprised that this hasn't happened yet.

I also agree that the question of who will contribute is the main question.  Ultimately, I would think the project contributors would have a large voice in determining where the project ends up.  I think the best choice should be determined by what is best for the long term health of the project, and my mind is open on that question.

Ultimately, the #1 question ought to be is who will contribute to this project going forward. Once that question is settled, the location and structure of the project should be up to that crew to devise.

PMC,

We probably need to discuss where DTP should end up in more detail.  I think there are pros and cons to it being inside or outside of WTP.  Not sure we covered this is much detail in previous discussion.  Perhaps we should schedule an ad-hoc meeting given the time window we are working with, or discuss over email if a meeting isn't possible.

The Tools or Technology PMCs are certainly valid choices, but WTP as a home for
DTP is not so odd. When the DTP project was started, back in 2005, one of the
main sources for the initial code contributions was the WTP RDB sub-project.
The Database Explorer, Table browser, and a lot of the connectivity code came
from there.  Once the DTP project became established, the WTP RDB project was
deprecated. So, in a sense, a move under WTP would be a return to DTP's roots
:-)
