Toward what purpose, and do you mean from within Eclipse with egit or from 
the command line?

Every commit in the git repository has a hash at which you can checkout. 
Releases such as WTP 3.8.1 get explicitly tagged like R3_8_1, and every 
built plug-in should now have a Eclipse-SourceReferences header in its 
manifest that points back to the corresponding git hash.
