[wtp-dev] Trip Report from EclipseSummit Europe, 2006

I've posted mine and Tim's presentations in our presentations archive. It was a "joint talk", only 45 minutes total, but I've posted them as two, since that was easier.
Tour of the Web Tools Platform (WTP) Project , David Williams and Tim Wagner, EclipseSummit 2006, Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, 2006-10-11.
WTP Incubation and Roadmap , Tim Wagner and David Williams, EclipseSummit 2006, Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, 2006-10-11.

Overall, I think the Summit was considered a success and will likely be another next year. One "innovation" they had was to have several all-day "symposium" where 20 or so participants could
dive into deep detail on some specific topic areas (e.g. server side Eclipse, testing, modeling, rich clients). These seemed to be well received.
It seemed to me, from my casual exposure, in the general sessions there was a lot more "end user" audience there than I had anticipated. I actually didn't get to attend
much of the conference, since it was held jointly with EMO Council meetings ... they'll be the subject of another trip report.

Here's some raw notes I took while at the Eclipse Summit

Over 300 attendees ("sold out").

Our WTP Tour Talk

approx. 125 people

asked "how many use WTP, as an end-user",
        about 3/4ths raised hands

I assume this means about 1/4 were "just learning" what it was. I'm not sure we targeted that 1/4th very well.

asked "how many create add-ons to WTP"
only 5 raised hands!  (two teams, talked to one afterwards, the Eclipse Health Care project)

later, when speaking about our 1.0 release, asked:
"how many still use Eclipse 3.1" ... are 'forced' to ... approximately 12 raised hands
I asked them to grab me and explain, or send email explaining
(no response yet, but I asked since I'm sometimes surprised at the bugs we have open on that 1.0.x stream).

Specific hallway talks:

Health Care Project (Brandon Ulrich and others)
wanted ability to "replace" schema model (for content assist and validation).
reason: health care "rules" can not be captured in a schema model (too complex, presumably)
They said they would work on making specific suggestions ... several cases of us needing to
define and Interface that they could provide implementation of.

        * I need to send them pointers to using our "adopter scanning tools". (they were very interested in providing usage reports).

Mathias Bogaert from cablevisor

suggested we provide better guidance on "when to use EMF versus DOM models"
(they went down EMF path, developed some editors, then felt it was overkill, and hard/impossible to use/extend with WST editors).

They wanted better clarity on meaning of provisional and internal ... they wondered "would it ever just be
removed and alternatives not provided? After explaining, they were relieved with the fact that it meant they would
only have to make a continuous investment (to migrate later, or adjust to breakages each release).

? from Artwaresoft
        ajax interest
wondered if work was being done to provide _javascript_ performance tools (he thought there was
a great need). [I told him there'd been talk between Ajax team and TPTP, but no concrete plans].

he wondered if "Google Tool Kit" would be easy to use with our tools? I told him I didn't know,
and recommended he ask on newsgroup.
