RE: [wtp-dev] Inconsistent behavior opening non-workspace files

Dave,

Keith has fixed some of the editing problems a little while ago, but I think in general we have more work to do to facilitate the development of external files.   So please continue to open bugs when you find problems.

Validation is something that may be difficult to support for external files.  The eclipse problems view and Marker support is based around workspace resources so we'll likely need to provide an alternate means of displaying problems when external files are validated.  This is  definitely a post 1.0 item but please do open a bug for this 'enhancement' so we can evaluate it.

In the meantime I'd encourage users to import files that need to be validated in the workspace.

Thanks for  your continued testing and feeback!

thanks

Craig

Arthur,

One or both of these have already been fixed and committed in the past 2 days :-)  I'll do more detailed testing when RC1 is ready.

Dave,

Thx. The bugs need to be reviewed now, but I suspect we won't be able to fix them for WTP 0.7. Just 2 weeks left and we have a lot of bugs in the queue. I think describing this as a limitation now is acceptable.

[wtp-dev] Inconsistent behavior opening non-workspace files

I just opened a new bug for the WSDL editor, and also am looking into a related
bug in the XSD editor.  I'll also test other editors.  But in general we need a
careful review of all editors when opening external, non-workspace files.  The
SSE docuentation states that external files (in general) are supported.  But
this is problematic in the current I-build.

Should these problems be reviewed and fixed prior to 0.7?  If not, we need an
explicit errata that external files are not supported in this release.

My experience testing with several end-users who are new to Eclipse but familiar
with several other XML editors is that they very often try to open external
files instead of moving them into a workspace.  Most don't know that you can
link external folders into a workspace.

One user complained that he could not find a way to validate XML Schemas or XML
instances.  Turned out that he was opening external files.  I don't know of any
way to validate non-workspace files.  Should I add a bugzilla to request this
enhancement, or do we make it clear that this feature requires a workspace
files?

WSDL editor throws exception opening any non-workspace file.

Cannot open imported schemas when the original schema was opened as an external
file

Thanks,
Dave Carlson
