Re: [wtp-dev] Comments on Installation for M3

+1

We should use Update Manager. Yes, Jeffrey is the responsible developer..

I'd recommend we also put effort forward during M4 to tie into update manager in a useful way.
The "Eclipse Model", if there is one, is to install the base Eclipse then install new features you want.
If someone wants "WTP" we should be able to automatically pull all pre-reqs (if not already installed),
as well as provide easier links for optional pieces, such as a derby runtime, for example.

I *think* Jeffrey is tasked with this? (apologies if wrong) and I think it was him and I that talked
about getting our build IDs as the forth field in our feature version IDs, set our plugin IDs to 0.0.0

(so computed during build) and we shouldn't have to do much more (though, that "feature == build ID" piece will
take some effort from our build experts).

We are planning to create a pre-packaged  version of WTP with I/S-Builds on the ObjectWeb Lomboz site, although not an official build that could help.

We need to do a better job for M4. Life should be easier for users. We are requesting permission to redistribute Apache and other code, and that will reduce the number of downloads. However, there are still a lot of steps. Why don't we provide, as an option, a completely integrated version for Milestone releases? This would include Eclipse and all the prereqs. Just one zip file. This is what typical users would download.

BTW, the Ant script,
fetchVendorContent.xml , courtesy of Keith Chong, to unzip and install all the third party code is very useful, but it is not part of the build. It lives in releng in CVS. I therefore added a link to CVS from the page [1].
