RE: [ui-best-practices-working-group] Panel: Usability and User Interface Best Practices in Eclipse

For an RCP representative on the panel I suggest Benjamin Pasero of RSS Owl.  I have never met him and don’t know what he would be like on a panel.  But I am impressed by the UI overhaul that he is doing for RSS Owl 2.0, and RSSOwl is one of the most comprehensive open source RCP apps that I know of.  Here is bio from the EclipseCon 2007 page:

Benjamin Pasero is the developer of the opensource newsreader RSSOwl. He is well experienced in the Eclipse Rich Client Platform with a focus on SWT and JFace and has written a number of articles on this topic, as well as giving workshops at conferences. Benjamin can be reached via e-mail to bpasero {_at_} rssowl.org.

Subject: [ui-best-practices-working-group] Panel: Usability and User Interface Best Practices in Eclipse

All,

I submitted the request for panel.  URL is here:

http://eclipsezilla.eclipsecon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4221

We can use this email thread for conversation or comment right in the bug.  Note this is on Eclipsezilla, you need a different login than bugzilla.

I put this in as a temporary abstract and commented that it will change:

Usability and User Interface Best Practices in Eclipse

Eclipse is a wonderfully extensible toolkit and a powerful tool. However companies/projects electing to build on Eclipse are often faced with an overwhelming number of design decisions when it comes to usability and user interface design.

This open panel will provide developers with an opportunity to discuss best practices in user interface design and to pose questions about specific issues to the panel and audience.

The panel includes a cross section of developers with extensive experience designing and implementing user interfaces in Eclipse.

Please yell now if there are violent objections to this content. Otherwise we will change it when we have a new draft we can review.

Thanks everyone for your interest and help in putting this panel together!

Bob
