At this point, wouldn't it be easier for you to start adopting JIRO container-based instances? Maybe the issue will just vanish magically by using the new infra, and if not, you should be able to get a clone of the environment with a simple docker pull and try to run your tests locally in that container to ease debugging.

Another possibility is that on this hipp10 instance, you set up another bash job which just starts an Eclipse IDE for instance, so see whether it starts and if it does not, if it tells more in logs.
