[tycho-user] Tycho versions plugin: tycho.mode=maven or not

I've seen many of examples on the web where the versions plugin is invoked with -Dtycho.mode=maven. I use it without, and it works just fine. Can anyone shed light on what this setting does and when it may be necessary?
