Greetings Tools and TPTP PMC-type folks.

TPTP is no longer functioning as a top-level project. The PMC is a
PMC of one that is unable to provide any useful guidance to the
    project.

I have opened a bug [1] to start the process of retiring the TPTP
top-level project and moving its assets under Tools.

I believe that this can be done with very little disruption to the
development team or community. The short version is that I'd like to
roll the existing three subprojects up into a single tools.tptp
project. No source repositories or download directories will have to
move. Some minor changes will be required for Bugzilla and IPZilla.
Due to the structure of the website--with subprojects nested under
the top-level project--little change is required there.

Time-wise, I'd like to get this done in May so that we can start the
process of migrating the source repositories to Git.

Thoughts, concerns, problems, +1s?

Thanks,
TPTP Platform is basically useless without any of the consuming
projects (Profiling, Testing and the already archived Monitoring),
of which testing is the one and only I would like to support and
      keep around in the future.

Regarding the point of moving projects around in the eclipse
      project space:

While being a single person top-level project may sound like fun
it really is not and has never been intended, as the situation has
been inherited as it is. I can understand that this may seem odd
to others and is probably not in line of what one would expect
from a Eclipse top level project.

Personally I really don't care where in the hierarchy this project
ends up, the only thing I care about is the additional effort
      generated by such a move.

For the near future, the amount of time I am able to invest in
this project is limited. From my personal point of view, any
effort going into this move will be missing elsewhere without
being of any use in regard to the project itself.

While we are at it, same goes for the effort of changing the
currently working build environment to support Git which is not
the trivial move it may seem.

I can see no benefit for this very project, though I am aware of
and appreciate the community related benefits of the Git move and
the need for a general policy.

It looks like the TPTP Platform project is alive and thriving. However,
Profiling and Testing seem to be stagnant.

TPTP is effectively a PMC with one member containing a single active
project with a single committer. There doesn't seem to be any prospect of
this changing any time soon.

Is it time to consider moving TPTP Platform to Tools and archive the rest?

With CVS being retired in favour of Git, it may make sense to combine these
efforts. Thoughts?

I've already tested MAT but it only helps for out of memory errors, and TPTP was the only one in the market place that would help me on RCP performance.

I'll fit with the last plugins of TPTP, I was just wondering if something else was on track for the next releases of Eclipse.

TPTP does not need to be on the release train to be useful for
performance work. The project and downloads are still available for
As for alternatives, there are a few listed in the Eclipse

Hi Anis,

speaking as the 'some interest from someone', I am currently taking care
of the TPTP project as both project lead and currently sole active
committer of the project.

As literally all of the previous committers left the project last year,
it has not been possible yet to keep up with the release train
activities for Indigo, even with the occasional support of some active
contributors out here.

Although not yet set in stone, future versions of TPTP will most
probably continue to not contain all subprojects of the previous
versions (Version 4.7 has already archived the monitoring subproject).

The main focus is currently on the testing subproject, while the
profiling project will have to be archived as well, due to a lack of
resources and active contributors/committers in this area.

So if you interested in taking care of this part of the project you are
more than welcome to join forces here, be it as a contributor or active
committer.

I am sure Wayne Beaton as the PMC of this project can provide you with
all necessary information on the process side of things to do that.

Torsten Stolpmann,
TPTP Project Lead

P.S.: Thanks David, for your precise summary and jumping in on the
discussion

I say "sort-of, nearly" since it was going to be archived, then there was
some interest from someone (sorry, don't remember who) in keeping part of
it alive, and from there, I do believe it stalled. No progress one way or
the other. I suspect if you were interested enough to "revive" some subset
of the project, that others could tell you the right process to follow (I
suspect it would take just a short proposal spelling what you would
propose, who (how many) would do it, etc. But, that's for others to say.

There is no substitute for it that I am aware of, but easily could be ...
there are so many projects at Eclipse its hard to keep track of them all.

There is RAT, http://www.eclipse.org/projects/project.php?id=tools.rat,
which _might_ be related to what you want to do, but that is a stalled
project too, as far as I can tell.
Now, for Memory Analysis, there is the MAT project,
http://www.eclipse.org/mat/, which I think is quite strong, many users,
several releases, etc. but from the little I know, that doesn't sound like
what you are looking for.

I'm sure others with more current knowledge will comment here eventually
(in next week or two).

             Hi Anis,

You are correct that TPTP is currently not supporting Indigo.
We had a change of leadership in the TPTP project as indicated
on the mailing list earlier this year. As such, the original
set of committers and PMC members (including myself and Oliver)
are no longer working on the TPTP project. For further project
inquiries, please send a note to the tptp-pmc@xxxxxxxxxxx
mailing list. The current TPTP PMC should be able to provide
you with the up-to-date outlook on their plans.

As noted in the TPTP web site, the current PMC lead for the
project is Wayne Beaton and the project lead for the TPTP
             sub-projects is Torsten Stolpmann.

I'm sure other can give better information than I, after they get back from
holidays and get "caught up" with email, etc., but, yes, the TPTP project
was sort-of, nearly cancelled and archived after Helios (that is, not in
Indigo). See

http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/project_info/devplans/EclipseTPTPProjectPlan2010.htm

Good luck,

Hi,

I am writing to you with regard to the TPTP project. I am wondering why it
is no longer part of eclipse and If there's a substitute for that in
Indigo? Specifically I am interested in tracing using TPTP Probekit.

Thanks,
Anis
