[technology-pmc] Fwd: [CQ 8941] SZIP 2.1

Hi everyone,

Sharon has asked if you will review our email discussion below and express your opinion on what we should do about the SZip CQ.

SZip is an optional dependency of HDF5. There are some issues with its license as Sharon describes below. We could use HDF5 without it. Sharon suggests that a Workswith Dependency might be appropriate.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay:

Perhaps it can be categorized as a Workswith Dependency.  If so, we keep the CQ and process it as such without review.

We will need PMC to discuss/vote on the matter.  Can you please start that discussion if it has not already happened.

Regards,
Sharon

Sorry, I should have written more, but I'm also on a hangout with the Science Working Group Steering Committee.

We can use HDF5 without SZIP and I normally do. If that would address the concerns, we could just close the CQ out with that resolution and it would work just fine for us.

Those are libraries that someone would only use if they wanted to do a custom build on their own computer to enable file compression.

Sharon,

Actually, SZIP is optional and we could use HDF5 without it.

Hi Anna/Jay:

As you know, HDF5 is available with the SZIP compression library but SZIP is
not part of HDF5 and has separate copyright and license terms [1] and [2].

According to preliminary review, the applicable license(s) has not been used
before at Eclipse and not likely to be approved by virtue of the fact that it
pre-seeds a commercial licensing program.

Is there an alternative available?  Have you discussed this dependency with
PMC?

Sorry not to have better news concerning its redistribution from ICE.

Regards,
Sharon
