Christian Thoens was nominated by James Kaufman as follows:
Chris has made several very important contributions since joining the STEM
project. In one of his firsst contributions, he implemented an improved
finite difference solver that prevents overshoots in model integraion
(summation) by varing the time step size. This is like a light weight RKKF
that dynamically adjust times just to prevent impossible (non-physical)
disease states.

Chris then went on to fully implemented major new STEM feature: A Multi
Population Model and Framework in which People (and groups) are aging.
Previously we demographic population age groups did not age. This is a
rather complex mathematical problem to solve correctly and self
consistently. Chris also implemented a full set of integration and JUnit
tests for his new contribution.

Chris found that several core STEM classes were not modeled in EMF. To
model these classes in EMF several adaptations had to be made Integration
of IntegrationLabel and IntegrationLabelValue EMF models
Emf models of disease and population labels were updated
logger had to be changed to prevent logging of "arrivals" and "departures"
(states internal to the computation only).
IntegrationDecorator and SanityChecker were modeled in EMF

Chris also found and fixed a bug when a disease model label is created for
a population group, the fraction is not used to set initial value in the
reset method in StandardDiseaseModelLabelImpl. The disease compartments
were not initialized with the right numbers when multipopulation models
were used.
