[tcf-dev] TCF 1.3 Planning

Dear TCF Committers,

It’s time doing some planning for the next TCF release(s) to keep our communities informed.

I guess it’s pretty clear that TCF-1.3 is going to release on the Eclipse 4.5 / Mars train, but we have some freedom about the timing.

I don’t know if you have followed the CDT debate around releasing 8.5 in September, or December.

I have attached an E-Mail thread below; I think it would make sense for TCF to follow the CDT lead, you may want to participate in the CDT discussion.

In terms of content, I think we should continue our agile development model of continuous improvement, strong automated testing and a focus on robustness and quality.

I also think we need to continue our strong focus on backward compatibility; in this respect, even tcf-0.4 may be important due to Yocto/oe-core.

I have collected a couple thoughts from our point of view on the Twiki:

https://wiki.eclipse.org/TCF/DraftPlan13

Besides Themes and Features, there are some questions to be decided around what streams to do automated testing on, as well as compatibility.

Please let us know any thoughts or comments – either things that you believe would be important for the project, or ideally features that you intend to be working on.

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Derek

Actually, CDT 8.5 was planned for September - which would be in line with the SR1 release. Releasing 8.5 in December would postpone it three months.

CDT switched to a 4 Month release cycle recently: http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/cdt-dev/msg26379.html

Hope this clarifies some things.

Regards

Thomas

Not sure I understand this...

It looks like you are doing *more* releases in the year, and not less. In the "old world" there would have been 8.4.1 in September and 8.4.2 in February. You are now adding 8.5 in December.

Can I ask the rationale? As I provide an Eclipse+CDT+plugins release to my customers, it is going to make it real hard to keep up to date, with lots of additional integration testing as well as an extra release to consider..

Subject: [cdt-dev] Releases

Hey gang,

I'm back in Ottawa but on vacation for the rest of the week. But I didn't want this conversation to die without a conclusion, especially with Luna SR-1 so close.

Unless someone has something on master they really want to get into Luna SR-1, I propose the following schedule.

September - Luna SR-1. CDT 8.4.1 off of the 8.4 branch. Cherry pick any important fixes you have on master to the branch.

first half of December - CDT 8.5 from master. Just in time for the holiday season. We would make sure that Luna SR-1 users can upgrade to it.

February - Luna SR-2. CDT 8.5.1 fixes from the 8.5 branch.

June - Mars. CDT 8.6.

I think the 6 month cycle would really help get quality features in each release. It also reduces the number of release reviews we need to do :).

Thoughts?

Doug.
