RE: [stp-pmc] SCA Graphical Composition tools

Hi Oisin,

We (SAP) are glad that you raise the point of openness.
Herewith, we would like to give a statement from SAP side with respect to this point and to share with you how do we see the next steps with regards to the SCA editor contribution.

At SAP, we are completely open for cooperation with anybody that aims at providing user-friendly tooling for manipulation of SCA in the context of STP project. Therefore, we consider as really good to have Obeo working on the topic as we could have someone to cooperate with from the very beginning.
In fact, we are not much in favor of contributing whatever code by whichever company just for the sake of the very contribution but rather having an initial and open dialogue with all the parties that declared SCA diagram editor contribution proposals. Btw. we believe that the meeting planned with Obeo is the first step in this direction.

With respect to the very Obeo & SAP meeting planned for next Thursday, from our side we would like to discuss what would be the best approach for collaboration/contribution from both sides as well as to cover some technical points like:

- Current status of the SCA graphical editors
- SCA 1.0 EMF modeling aspects
- Initial fixes made to the SCA metamodel, that are already done by Obeo
- Discuss the current extension points, if any
- Compare the current solutions provided by both companies and then decide how to proceed - to get either of the tools as an initial code base and to transfer/contribute the unique features from the other tool

As soon as we get together and define common basis, next steps, project setup, etc. and in general, agree on the collaboration, we will notify the community with the outcome.

Last but not least, as you already mentioned, everyone who is interested in the topic is more that welcome to join the meeting next Thursday. Conf call details will be sent in the beginning of the week.

Subject: [stp-pmc] SCA Graphical Composition tools

I'd like to draw your attention this thread [0] on the dev list,
and give an update on what we should do here. Bogdan (SAP) and
Stéphane (Obeo) have both developed cool tools for constructing
SCA compositions and want to contribute. I've already started
the contribution process with Obeo, and have submitted a CQ [1]
on their behalf. There will be a further email on that topic.

So, what we should do here is give these guys the space to
be able to bring their solutions together and come out with
the best of both worlds. The best way to do this, IMHO, is
to accelerate the Incubator proposal (yes, the ball is in my
court there - I will send out an update soon) and put
together a space for those guys to work it through, with
a goal to 'graduate' to a full SCA developer kit sub-project
with its own schedule.

In the meantime, I need to clarify contribution status with
SAP and get an idea of how open the guys are about working
together to produce a derived work that takes the best from
both.

Note that SAP has proposed a call and a webex [2] for next
week, if you can make it, I think it will be very interesting.

   best regards
    Oisin
