Mauritanian authorities closed on [Fri 24 Oct 2014] their eastern
border with neighboring Mali after this country registered a confirmed
case of Ebola virus disease (EVD), said the Ministry of Health in a
brief statement according to "Anatolia". "The decision is part of a
plan to prevent the spread of the virus in the border areas with
Mali."

The Mali Ministry of Health announced last [Thu 23 Oct 2014] evening
that they have recorded the 1st confirmed case of EVD in a girl who
came from Kisadugo in neighboring Guinea. She was placed under
quarantine in Kayes, west of the country on Wed 22 Oct 2014 before the
disease was confirmed on Thu 23 Oct 2014. Thus, Mali became the 6th
country in West Africa to be hit by the Ebola virus.

The Mauritanian government had already decided last month [September
2014] to ban nationals of African countries, which are affected by the
Ebola virus from entering their territory in order to prevent the
spread of the virus in the country. Charlie Cooper, a newspaper
reporter in the British newspaper "The Independent" published on the
newspaper front page on [Fri 24 Oct 2014] that and academic study
conducted by researchers at Yale University, in collaboration with the
Ministry of Health of Liberia, pointed to the possibility of the death
of tens of thousands of people by next December [2014] only in the
city of Monrovia, capital of Liberia, if decisive action from all
countries of the world are not taken to address the spread of the
disease. The study warned that the international community's response
is not sufficient.

[Maps of the region can be seen at
<http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/westafrica.pdf> and
<http://healthmap.org/promed/p/2771>. Kayes in Mali is a large city
located along the Senegal River, a short distance from the Mauritanian
border. This border stretches over 2237 km (1390 mi) but most of it is
desertic, almost inaccessible. Mauritania has denied access to its
territory to nationals from EVD affected countries since September
2014 and now that a new EVD case was identified in Mali, Mauritania
decided to close borders with this country. This is in line with the
decision taken previously and demonstrates the fear for the disease in
a country in which medical and financial resources are rather scarce.
