[stem-dev] Notes from STEM Community Call 11/10/11

STEM Community Call November 3, 2011

On call: Jamie, Max, Judy, Matt, Kun, Stefan

New: Introductions: Maximilian Hughes-Brandl, hughes-brandl@xxxxxxxxxx; based in Munich, in 2nd week working with Bfr; colleague will join call next week

New: Eclipse contribution process; legal process, etc. ensures pedigree of any code; requires signed agreement from individual he has written code, also statement from individual’s company; more below under discussion of shape file importer

1. RELEASE PLANNING: STEM 1.2.3 RC3 IS UP
Release Date for STEM 1.2.3 is Nov 21

Looking good

Stefan: Matthias reports problems with mosquito demo; Jamie: Worked fine yesterday, will check
TARGET DATE FOR 1.3 IS 1/07/2012

New capabilities & features: 10  years of Earth Science Data; calibrated malaria disease model dengue fever disease model, ‘Aedes'' not yet calibrated; additional NLS + User ability to switch languages; new loggers released for 1.2.3; new differential equation solver(s) from commons.math library; population rescaler; bug fixes from 1.2.2

TO DO for 1.3: Delete old loggers and views; integrate external models for study of food based transmission; include shape file import utility; need presentation slides

TO DO: Eclipse has not made progress yet on OpenMap CQ; probably okay, but might be a nonstandard license. Possible Interim step - write import from KML

Max: Once know about OpenMap, process will be easier. Jamie: In interim, can create own interface between their stuff and OpenMap to get going

Max: How to create ID?

Jamie: STEM can work w/o standard ID, has conventions to create ID; when using a shape file, need a human interaction (wizard or interface); within Eclipse framework, can create one of more Eclipse plugins; ant script creates plugins

DISCUSSION RE SHAPE FILE IMPORTER: Jamie: First, do shape file importer as a developer tool, then decide how/whether to create an end user tool; installing Earth Science data on wiki a good example; downloadable scenario with USA & Mexico illustrates how STEM can decorate graph; if need to add a completely new property; may need to create code; prefix of the ID has to be the parent.

Jamie: Clarify goal for shape file w/ Matthias; may need use cases; start with developer process, think in terms of what a developer does. Stefan: End user tool pretty advanced

Jamie to Max: Can have 1-on-1 call in future; in meantime, Max will get up on Bugzilla; submit bugs; edit wiki; document what he does on wiki; communicate w/ developers, community via stem-dev, newsgroup; access via links on STEM frontpage, also Google

2. NEW DOC FOR 1.3: Dengue; Initializers; Loggers; Malaria (done); Mosquitoes VCAP (done); Population Rescaler; Shape file importer (NEW); Solvers

3. IDEAS FOR FUTURE STEM DEMOS
FD vs Integration; Data Import example (playback); Data input example (initialize from csv); Data logging image and data examples; Dengue Fever example(s); Disease Playback demo; others?

4. MATTHIAS’ QUESTION ON STEM NEWSGROUP ON MODELING FOOD MEDIATED DISEASES.

Jamie: Create a ‘toy’ scenario on a lattice

Stefan: Will add discussion on how to construct graph, add edges w/o polygons

5. NORWAY MAP UPDATE FOR/FROM DISEASE PREDICTION SERVICE FOR NORTHERN NORWAY (KASSAYE)
Modified maps from the Norwegian mapping agency maps, see bug 362774.

Jamie: Has used property files to create new plugin, will send to Kassaye; Norway can use now;

Jamie: Will work w/ Eclipse to have published
