Re: [stem-dev] Dan's comments stem-dev Digest, Vol 25, Issue 7

Dan, you made a few points in your recent comments.

> Submitting an agenda item to a phone call that happens once a week and lasts for about half an hour is an inadequate communications channel for a complex software development project like STEM that is being developed by a geographically distributed team.

There has never been a rule that this is the ONLY way to suggest a topic for discussion. Committers are ALWAYS welcome to put items on stem-dev or the newsgroup at ANY time. Question Dan: Is there any technical STEM topic you would like to discuss?
You are free to initiate such a discussion on stem-dev at any time.

> It is such a small window of opportunity at an inconvenient time for almost half the committers that I don't see what the purpose of the call is.
> It certainly isn't enough time to adequately discuss anything; it doesn't leave a lasting record for anyone else to follow.

It sometimes helps to offer multiple opportunities and means to support communication. The call is just one such opportunity. Everyone is welcome but no one is forced to join. Some people join only occasionally. As I mentioned in the stem-dev note, the call is not only for committers,

but also for new users who might want to meet the team. We put the minutes of every call on stem-dev. Question Dan, do you want to make a motion that we no longer have a call and put that to a committer vote??

> One of the requirements of the EDP for open communication and transparent activities.  I don't see any communication between committers on stem-dev, and there is scant communication on the phone call.  So, where is the communication between committers?

There is communications on STEM dev between committers. It is true that some very new contributors sometimes email the active committers directly with questions or issues. When this happens we do two things.
i) We respond as quickly as possible, usually within a day. and ii) we remind them to please use stem-dev.
Some people may be initially shy about using a public mailing list. Over time, with additional committers coming on board, I am confident people will adjust and begin to use it even more.
Since you are a project lead, do you have any specific constructive suggestion you'd like to make? I'm a believer in leading by example.  Why not make a post to stem-dev about a technical effort you'd like to contribute to?

Werner,
The Global malaria model would indeed include India. We don't want to
pre-announce research that isn't done yet and I'm not sure that can happen
by June but maybe we could have a scenario for you to demo at a demo camp.
Can you please let us know if/when you are sure you are going to the
Bangalore demo camp?

Jamie

Re: STEM weekly discussion topics and weekly call agenda

Judy/all,

Thanks for the update.

Especially the Malaria Model sounds interesting. Does "Global" also
include India or other parts of Asia? As I would love to use that either
for Eclipse Day India in May or a soon to be expected Eclipse DemoCamp
Bangalore in early June (could be nearby if the trip is affordable and I
can spare a day, too)

Speak soon,
Werner

Subject: STEM weekly discussion topics and weekly call agenda

STEM community,
Please find below a set of discussion topics for the week.  We encourage
you to add your items to this list  (email stem-dev and please cc: Judy
Douglas).
Please feel free to comment on or discuss any or these items through
stem-dev. We also invite discussion on these topics during the weekly
call. As always, minutes
of the discussion will continue to be sent out to stem-dev.

Discussion Topics of the Week:

Remaining items for Release 1.2
       New documentation needed
       List of new plugins
       Performance enhancements

Graphical Editor (Jan-Frederick, please add any issues for discussion
here)

Student Projects (Bryan and Justin, please add any issues for discussion
here)

Distributed STEM:
We have just implemented and are now testing a new class for partitioning
a STEM graph into collections for distribution. Hope to have some test
results to describe soon.

Update on (Global?) Malaria Model

Processing 10 years of Earth Science Data

Release/Release candidate process discussion:
To make it easier for developers to have input on upcoming builds and
releases, should we add a wiki
page where any developer can document changes (new features, new
requirements) since the last release?
This page can include target dates for future integration builds and
release
builds on this page (of course we will keep it in synch with the project
meta-data). The wiki page could contain important
information that we can't list right now in the metadata such as new
plugins that must be added.

Submitting an agenda item to a phone call that happens once a week and lasts for about half an hour is an inadequate communications channel for a complex software development project like STEM that is being developed by a geographically distributed team.  It is such a small window of opportunity at an inconvenient time for almost half the committers that I don't see what the purpose of the call is.  It certainly isn't enough time to adequately discuss anything; it doesn't leave a lasting record for anyone else to follow.

One of the requirements of the EDP for open communication and transparent activities.  I don't see any communication between committers on stem-dev, and there is scant communication on the phone call.  So, where is the communication between committers?

I am all in favor of us making better use of stem-dev, and agree on it's
value - especially for people who are in other timezones.
Developers should absolutely use stem-dev for this purpose.

Regarding the call, it is already our practice that anyone can submit
agenda items to the call for discussion. These can certainly include
issues that require in depth discussion.

I do not want to restrict the call to only one topic per call. As Dan
points out, giving everyone an opportunity to speak does not take much
time.
The phone call is also intended as a vehicle for new users (not only
developers) to meet the team, describe their interests, and ask questions,
and make requests.

Yossi,
I like very much your suggestion on the building / releasing roadmap.
Right now the formal dates exist only in the metadata on the Eclipse
Website.
The leads are supposed to maintain this. To make it possible for others to
have input
on upcoming builds and releases I'm thinking we might want to add a wiki
page where
any developer can document changes (new features, new requirements) since
the last release.
We can also put the target dates for future integration builds and release
builds on this page (and of course make sure
the meta-data stays up to date. The wiki page could contain important
information that we can't list right now in the
metadata such as new plugins that must be added. What do you think?

Hi team,

I've been looking at the SimulationControl, TimeProvider and STEMTime
classes and trying to figure out a way to display the timestamp in the
tooltip. Is this the right place to be looking?

I noticed SimulationControl class accesses STEMTime and displays it in the
Simulation panel - would a similar approach of accessing STEMTime be
appropriate in the MapCanvas class, or is there an easier way to access
STEMTime?

Thanks.
