[rt-pmc] Re: Swordfish IP troubles

Hi Oliver. Please reconsider. Perhaps we can have Zsolt join you as co-lead?

In my opinion, removing you as the project lead would be a mistake. Frankly, I doubt very much that this problem will ever happen again under your leadership (a new project lead is going to have to learn this on their own.) There are other more productive ways to take responsibility for the mistakes that have occurred.

There are plenty of folks to blame for what has happened. I am not so interested in who is at fault, as I am in trying to prevent this from happening again. It would be helpful for me to understand why the breakdown occurred so that we can fix the holes in our process. I assume that this was an accident (not a malicious act) that occurred because some number of the Swordfish committers simply didn't know any better. It is the responsibility of the project lead, mentors, PMC, and EMO to make sure that committers do know better and somewhere along the way our process has broken down.

I believe that--based on this and other experiences--the documentation that we provide for new committers is difficult to find and consume. In the coming quarter, I have set as one of my goals to make the documentation provided for committers more easily consumed. I am also planning to start a series of webinars to help committers and project leads bring themselves up to speed. I would also like to explore how we can get project mentors to engage with the project to make sure that everybody is armed with the information that they need to have.

Your input in this process would be appreciated. I need to know that I am spending my energy doing the right things. I think that you are well situated to provide me with feedback in this regard.

Thanks,

Wayne

Dear Mike,
dear Wayne,
dear RT PMC members,
dear Swordfish committers,

now that we’ve done all we could do from our side to help resolve this unfortunate issue and the dust slowly starts to settle, it’s time for me to address myself to you and make a formal apology on the team’s and my behalf for the disaster we have caused.

We have not yet had the peace and time to step back and fully analyze and understand how all this could have happened, but one thing is undisputable: as the project lead, I have failed to exercise due care and on that account I assume full responsibility.

I have therefore decided, in accordance with my organization, to resign from my role as the project lead with immediate effect and I solicit the RT PMC to comply with my request. I am deeply convinced that this is in the best interest of the project, the Eclipse community as a whole and, ultimately, myself.

At the same time, I’d like to nominate my colleague and fellow committer Zsolt Beothy-Elo as my successor. Zsolt is a person I trust and I’m absolutely certain that, under his guidance, we’ll be able to establish the necessary processes and controls that help prevent us from failing again.

On a personal note, I have to concede that taking on multiple roles in Swordfish (project lead, lead architect and public face of the project), along with other responsibilities I have in my organization, obviously was too much for me to handle. I will remain with the Swordfish project, however — as the lead architect, a committer and a frequent speaker at conferences.

I’d like to thank you all for your great support and guidance in these difficult times and I’m looking forward to continue working with you.

Kind regards,
Oliver
