Re: [ptp-user] Need help about setting up and debugging!

Thanks, ok,now  just few questions about PTP.
I have just installed the new version of eclipse (Ganymede, for C/C++ developers). I also installed the PTP 2.1 plugin from the update tool.
Then , based on my memories, I go to the folder where the plugin is installed, and from console I give the command:

CFLAGS=-I/opt/openmpi/include LDFLAGS="-L/opt/openmpi/lib -Wl,-rpath,/opt/openmpi/lib" sh BUILD

after a lot of messages, what I noticed is that NO proxy server binary file has been created in the "bin" folder. Curiosly, the file created are: sdm, ptp_mpich2_proxy.py,  ptplib.py

So...here I go again...problems installing ptp....
Can you help me?

Hi Fabio
I assume you mean for general eclipse questions as opposed to PTP-specific ones.
Yes, there are lots.
Most of the user questions are handled on newsgroups (we are different, we use ptp-users mailing list here).
See http://www.eclipse.org/newsgroups/ for more info

If you don't know where to start asking questions,
http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.newcomer is a good place to start.

The eclipse mailing lists are generally, but not always, for developer-type discussions
http://www.eclipse.org/mail/
(but like I said, our ptp-users list is a mailing list and not a newsgroup, we found it easier to monitor this way)

Here are the PTP mailing lists for reference:
http://www.eclipse.org/ptp/mailing_lists.php

    Fabio,

The problem you're seeing is caused by the application failing when it
tries to load the libpetsc.so shared library on the cluster nodes. This in
turn causes gdb to exit immediately which results in the behavior you're
seeing. The debugger does not handle this situation well.

Unfortunately the current (2.0) version of PTP does not allow you to alter
the mpirun command line (in order to add '-x LD_LIBRARY_PATH', for
example), so the only way to get around this problem is to add the path to
the libpetsc.so library to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable in your .bashrc.
The next version of PTP (2.1, due around August) will remove this
    restriction.

I also discovered some issues when debugging your application, which I
think are related to debugging C++. These didn't stop debug session, but
did result in dialogs popping up fairly regularly.

    To summarize this issue:

    1. The application must be able to be run from the command line without
supplying additional arguments (such as -x). In particular, the PATH and
LD_LIBRARY_PATH must be set correctly on the frontend and all the nodes.
This limitation will be removed in PTP 2.1.

    2. The debugger does not handle this failure condition very well. I'll be
looking into improving the error messages in 2.1.

    3. The debugger has some issues when used on C++ code. I'll determine what
these problems are and make sure they're fixed in 2.1.

    Hope this is useful.

    Regards,

    Greg

    Hi all!
Seems to go better now....I made some cleanup in my workspace
(completely erased .medatada folder) and executed eclipse -clean
    option.
Now the debugger seems not to return any error when launcing!
    But, still strange things happen!
When launched, one second later all the process exit (with the
"nornal exit" icon), ad only the frontend node remains active.
It's strange, because I noticed that when start I debugging my
program on N nodes, I can see the sdm,gdb and orte processes
running on N+1 processors, while I can't see the program itself,
because it closed as soon the debug started.
Maybe it's something related to the allocation of processes...any
    idea?

    thanks,
    Fabio

First, thank you all guys for trying to help me!
This issue is more and more becoming a nightmare!!! Now I
removed the old GDB, and I've installed the latest version: 6.8.
And still there's no way to get the parallel debugging work!!!
I've installed the new GDB in a folder that is shared between
all the nodes. I added the path to the binaries to my $PATH
environment variable, whenever I access each node (via ssh or
rsh) the environment variable is passed through, so on the node
    the gdb binary is accessible.
BTW, I also updated the "path to the backend debugger" field of
    the SDM debugger preferences.
The previous Error Message ("BFD: myprog: don't know how to
handle OS specific section `.gnu.hash' [0x6ffffff6]") no longer
    appears.
So I guess you were right about the version of gdb...
However, the Problem Occurred window raise up as soon as I lunch
the debugging, reporting the generic message: "Handling Debug
Event (time, etc etc...)" and nothing in the details.
When I go to see what's up in the terminal, the following
    appeared:

    Hello Fabio,

the man page LD(1) says the following:
    --hash-style=style
Set the type of linker's hash table(s). style can be
    either "sysv"
for classic ELF ".hash" section, "gnu" for new style GNU
".gnu.hash" section or "both" for both the classic ELF
    ".hash" and
new style GNU ".gnu.hash" hash tables. The default is
    "sysv".

Maybe changing the style helps. Furthermore I have found
    this:
    http://code.linuxonly.nl/code/gnuhash.html

There is a Debian bug report about that problem too. There
    it is suggested to
    upgrade gdb.
    http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=425838

    Benjamin
